A Prayer for All of Us

It continually amazes me that good questions lead so naturally to good answers, and that beautiful questions lead to even better answers! Each time we open ourselves to the things we don’t know, we’ve opened the doors to discovery and wonder and greater understanding.
I’m Scott Lennox and you’re listening to The Beautiful Question, a consideration of things that matter every day.
[ theme music & intro ]
From time to time, it seems right to lean more strongly into the prayerful traditions of my Celtic ancestors and speak the things that have been on my heart. This is one of those time.
Join me this week as I off a prayer for all of us. Stay with me.

When I still myself and open my heart, these are the words that come pouring out of me.
May peace of mind and heart settle on you the way evening falls, enveloping you like a warm blanket, an embracing cloak that enfolds you in ways that are deeper and closer and safer than you have ever, ever known before. And in the depth and the unbreakable and inexhaustible purity of that peace, may you find the rest and solace and courage you need to release all the things you no longer need to carry—things that have weighed you down and held you back—things that were never yours in the first place.
And having released them, may you become lighter and more flexible and buoyant, healing from the inside out and returning to the freedom that has always belonged to you because it is part of your most essential and irreplaceable self.
May you come to know yourself as the luminous being you truly are, seeing and feeling your inner Light with a clarity that eclipses all the lies and distortions the world has forced on you. And as you regard yourself clearly and honestly, perhaps in the mirror, perhaps in the silence and stillness of your own awareness, perhaps in that twilight between waking and sleeping, may you feel washing over you the waves of love and acceptance and the wholeness you have always sought after and always deserved because they were and are always yours.
May life itself arise to come along beside you like a wise and loving partner walking with you in the most supportive ways, nudging and guiding you, sometimes pointing, sometimes whispering, sometimes speaking clearly and loudly, always offering you exactly what you need at exactly the right moment and in exactly the right ways.
And as you feel that support and strength and compassion, that wisdom that is greater than your own, may the urgency you’ve held fall away and vanish into nothing as you keep going with ever greater confidence, fully aware that the path you’ve chosen is the right one, in fact the only one that will bring you home to yourself and will bring you the fullness that life has to offer.

May you find your own clear voice—strong and sure and true. And with it, may you fearlessly speak what you must speak without holding back even a syllable of your own truth—the truth that has been completely at home in the depths of you since the moment of your conception—the truth that you are whole and intact and worthwhile, in fact, that you are valuable beyond measure—the truth that you have a place in this world that is yours alone—the truth that wherever you go and wherever you are, you belong.
And as the sound of your voice rings out, may its beauty and resonance embolden you to keep it as finely tuned as the most precious of instruments, for so it is, and you are its masterful musician.
And finally, as you witness and as you sense what is happening in the world, instead of being overwhelmed and reacting in ways that are not in keeping with who you really are, may you respond wisely and justly and at a pace that will neither drain nor exhaust you. May you carefully measure how much you are taking in. And in the same way, may you thoughtfully choose what real steps you can take, including the awareness that there will be times when the best you can do is offer compassion or step out of the way.
And may you reach for and accept the things that will keep you feeling hopeful and encouraged.
And may you add your light with the light of those who, like yourself, are choosing to make a difference right where they are.
And may you know that you are already enough, exactly as you are, not only in this moment, but in every moment.
—Amen
This week’s Beautiful Question is a single one that I offer from my heart straight to yours.
The question is this: Are you willing to repeat this prayer over and over through the days ahead as a way of staying focused and knowing that you are loved and cared about?
[ brief pause ]
You happen to be worth whatever it takes to live well. There is no force greater than Light.
As I say each time,
My Light with Your Light!
